Gavi is a small jungle Eco tourism spot in Kerala. This has become popular after the place got listed in ” Alistair Sawdays” – The famous international travel website. Unlike other eco tourism places in India, this is less popular and less crowded.
Gavi tourism offers sustainable living for the locals too. They help the tourists in the activities like trekking, bird watching, wildlife safaris etc. The involvement of the local population ensures the conservation of the wildlife. The place is famous for the natural beauty and the presence of the endangered species like Nilgiri Tahr, lion tailed macaque etc. Visitors are often spot them near Gavi. Bird watchers consider Gavi as a treasure trove of opportunity. you can spot more than 260 species of birds.
If you are looking for a pure wildlife experience, Gavi is the place for you. The tent can be pitched inside the forest and just imagine spending a night there!!! Tree houses are also available for a night stay. You may wake up to the beauty of the mother nature. The early morning chirping of birds, low hanging clouds, misty mountain around you, what else you can demand!!! Gavi is becoming a famous honeymoon spot also. Many honeymooners include Gavi in the Kerala honeymoon packages. Mobile phones are useless here as Gavi does not have coverage except one point. In case you need to make some urgent calls, you need to reach this point. Tourist officials will come here every evening to receive the bookings from the tourists.
Day trip available in Gavi which starts around 8:00 am. This is done under the guidance of forest officials. By 12:30 the forest trekking will be over and lunch will be served. After the lunch a walk in the cardamom plantation is done. You will also get a chance to see how the cardamon is being cured. You can also visit the Sabarimala view point from where the you can see the Sabari hills with its full majesty. The forest Museum is the last thing in the itinerary. The day trip cost would be around Rs 1000. A boat ride also available upon request which will cost around Rs 200 for two persons.
How do you reach Gavi? Gavi is in Pathanamthitta district. By road, you may come to Kumily( around 110 km from Kottayam). Two KSRTC buses are available from Kumily. The first trip starts at early morning 5:45 and reaches Gavi around 7:15 am. The second schedule is at 1:15 pm and reaches Gavi around 2:45pm. Please note that private vehicles are not allowed here.
